Every Sunday beginning from January 21st, the Venerable Guan Cheng held a Dharma Talk series on “Verses Delineating the Eight Consciousnesses”. The verses were condensed by Master Hsuan Tsang of the Tang Dynasty from hundreds of scriptures and texts in the Consciousness-Only Doctrine. It is a must-read for beginners to the doctrine, with the central idea that both goodness and evil stem from our own minds. Studying the Doctrine of Consciousness will help us understand our inner worlds, which then greatly improves our practices as Buddhists.

The Abbot and the Sangha at the temple performed two Chanting Devotions: for the Amitabha Buddha’s Birthday on the 5th, and for the Sakyamuni Buddha’s Enlightenment Day on the 26th. Both ceremonies took place from 9:30 to 11:30 AM. The day on which the Sakyamuni Buddha attains Enlightenment is one of the most important of the Buddhist year, for it is also when His birth and passing are celebrated.

--- Sep 2006 to Nov 2006
Venerable Guan Cheng held a Dharma talk series on the Sutra on the Eight Realizations of Great Beings (as spoken by the Buddha), which took place every Sunday from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM from September to November of 2006. During each session, the abbot systematically dissected and presented each realization that is mentioned in the sutra and answered a variety of questions from audience members. Over 300 people came to celebrate the abbot’s birthday, and to raise funds for the temple’s charity and freeing sea life programs. Attendees enjoyed a delicious lunch buffet with more than 25 different vegetarian dishes, and watched a video documentary of the Venerable’s most recent trip to China. He and many volunteers freed over 100,000 sea animals in Hong Kong and Guangzhou. He also visited disadvantaged students and seniors who are the beneficiaries of the temple’s ongoing poverty relief initiatives.

More than a thousand Buddhist leaders, experts, and politicians from 34 countries around the world gathered to discuss the central theme: “A harmonious world begins in the mind”.
